Detailed Workflow Breakdown of Carbonization Furnace for Charcoal
Biomass Pretreatment
Biomass pretreatment involves drying and crushing. First, dry the biomass to a moisture content below 15%. Next, crush it to a particle size smaller than 20 mm. The processed biomass is then transported to the main furnace via a high-angle conveyor, preparing it for the subsequent carbonization process.01
High-Temperature Carbonization
In the carbonization furnace, biomass undergoes various thermal decomposition reactions:
- Initially, dehydration occurs at temperatures below 150°C, where moisture evaporates.
- As the temperature rises to about 220-270°C, cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose undergo demethylation, releasing combustible gases.
- When the temperature increases further to 270-400°C, volatiles are removed. This stage mainly involves pyrolysis, dehydrogenation, condensation, and hydrogenation of aromatic compounds.

Combustible Gas Recovery
Combustible gases (such as CO, H₂, CH₄) generated during carbonization pass through a dust removal system. These gases then enter the combustion system through pipelines. They replace the original fuel (heavy oil, diesel, natural gas) and continuously provide energy to the carbonization kiln.03
Charcoal/Biochar Collection
After carbonization, high-temperature charcoal first enters a water-cooled screw conveyor. The cooling water in the conveyor takes away the heat, lowering the charcoal temperature to below 45°C. Once cooled, operators can collect and store the charcoal or biochar.04
